“Allure of the Near East: Treasures of the Huntington Museum of Art” at the Museum of Art

Museum of Art

Join us for a new exhibition at the Museum of Art, 491 N. Main St., Allure of the Near East: Treasures of the Huntington Museum of Art, from Oct. 29, 2021 to Jan. 22, 2022.

This exhibition explores the arts and crafts traditions of the Near East and the West’s historic fascination with its decorative items.

The Las Cruces Museum of Art will be the first hosting institution for this exhibition. The Near Eastern world — roughly, the region of Asia west of India — is a vivid patchwork of many different people, languages, and traditions. Its history stretches back to Neolithic times, and its dynasties and empires have contributed in major ways to the development of human knowledge.

Comprising works of fine glassware, ceramics, metalwork, painting, weaponry, weaving, and much more, Allure of the Near East shares 45 timeless treasures from a region whose everyday life, history, and culture offer many parallels to our own.

The works, some of which are centuries old, include objects meant for palaces as well as ordinary homes, evoking a rich and comprehensive vision of daily life in the Near East, both recent and long ago. Allure of the Near East: Treasures of the Huntington Museum of Art was organized by the Huntington Museum of Art and is toured by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC.

The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The museum is accessible via RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1, Stop 36.

For information, visit the Museums System website at MUSEUMS | Las Cruces, NM (las-cruces.org) or call 575/541-2137.
